As a Texas NuvaRing lawyer, I am following the developments in the litigation of this medical device. NuvaRing is a non-biodegradable, flexible, latex-free vaginal ring which has a combination of the hormones estrogen and progestin. Etonogestrel, the active metabolite of desogestrel, is a synthetic form of the naturally occurring (female) sex hormone progesterone.

The NuvaRing vaginal contraceptive ring was originally developed by Organon, which is a Dutch pharmaceutical company. Organon received approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration to sell NuvaRing device in the United States on October 3, 2001. Interestingly, in October 2003, The New England Journal of Medicine addressed research indicating that desogestrel, when taken orally, can significantly increase a person’s risk of blood clots. However, by 2007, approximately 1,500,000 women were NuvaRing around the world.
