As a Corpus Christi Pradaxa lawyer, I am aware of the many complications with this medication.  Pradaxa (dabigatran etexilate) was approved by the Food & Drug Administration as a medication for reducing the risk of stroke in persons who experience non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Pradaxa is a prescription blood thinner which was made to reduce the risk of blood clots and strokes. Pradaxa interferes with thrombin, which is the body’s main clotting agent, and thus prevents blood clot formation. Pradaxa is given to patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib) which is not caused by heart valve problems.

Over one million prescriptions for Pradaxa were written by physicians from 2010 to 2011. Doctors do not mandate that persons on a Pradaxa regimen have to have regular blood tests, which is common for persons who use other blood thinning medications. Despite FDA approval, Pradaxa has been associated with approximately 260 deaths to date. One article has indicated that patients who use Pradaxa have a 33% increased risk of having heart attack or other heart disease problems. Because of these serious health risks, the FDA has begun investigating Pradaxa to try to determine whether strong warning labels and regulation is necessary.

Certain individuals have a higher risk of complications, as well as heart attack or bleeding issues. These include:

1. Patients with kidney problems;

2. The elderly (including those over 75);

3. Persons who are already taking other medications which promote bleeding risks, such as aspirin; and

4. Patients with ulcers or stomach bleeding problems.

The most serious problems associated with the Pradaxa is extremely severe and/or uncontrollable bleeding. This can cause severe medical complications and even death. The worst part of these complications is how fast Pradaxa bleeding can occur. These events can become serious and even deadly in a very short time period.
